RANDOM REMINDER

PAINTING THE TOWxN ORANGE

Christchurch will have something more than the election to talk about on Monday morning. Those getting off the buses in town are going to have a surprise. All through the streets they will see bright splashes of orange, for over the week-end all the City Council’s rubbish bins are going to be changed from the present light green. This may not seem to be a particularly exciting item of news, but it is going to attract attention. The work is to be done by the combined Round Tables of Christchurch, with about 70 Merlins on the job. The tins will

be* taken down from the posts today, and it is hoped to have them all back in position by Sunday evening, after they have been steam-cleaned, dried, prepared for painting, given their coats of orange, and had an ' induction to keep the city tidy added to them. I Suburban tins will not > be neglected. This noble > effort to improve the i appearance of Christchurch is being .made as i part of the Anti-Litter [ Campaign which starts i on Monday. The scheme to have the tins repainted : and made more noticel able has, of course, the , full backing of the City i Council, and it should I have the desired effect.

But it will need the support of everyone if it is to be a success. For instance, those in the habit of eating bananas in buses are asked to put the skins back into their brief cases and keep them there until they reach a tin. Hunters back from the hills, etc., are asked not to discard unwanted game about the streets: it is not so long ago that a very dead eel caused consternation in Cathedral square. Christchurch, to most of those who live in it. is worth looking after. The Round Tables, and ihe Anti-Litter campaign, offer the city a useful reminder of this.
