CONSTABLE GAOLED

Burglary While On Duty (N.Z. Preti Association/ INVERCARGILL. Nov. 29. An Invercargill police constable, Stanley William Colligan, aged 34. was today sentenced to nine months' imprisonment by Mr K. H. J. Head if en, S.M. The Court was told that, while in uniform and on duty, Colligan had been apprehended by another policeman after he had broken into an Invercangill restaurant during early last Friday morning. In sentencing Colligan. the Magistrate said that, were it not for his good record in the past and for special circumstances in Colligan’s case, the term of imprisonment would have been very much longer. Imprisonment was the only course he could take, he said. He had a duty to protect the public and he would be failing in that duty if he imposed any other penalty.
