ROUND IN LOG

Flash Startles Mill-Hand (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. November 29. A small shell, fired in Malaya possibly during World War 11, exploded after it was sliced in half by a circular saw in the Mount Eden factory of Henderson and Pollard. Ltd. The shell was embedded in a length of punah—a variety of hardwood imported from northern Malaya. Mr H. Webb was cutting the timber when there was a “sudden flash and a bang.” Workmates who heard the explosion found Mr Webb unhurt, but fighting a small sawdust fire which the explosion started on his machine. “It happened about 2ft from my face.” said Mr Webb, “but I did not notice the explosion as much as the flash.” There is still another 25,008 ft of punah to be sawn.
