OFFICIAL REPORT

The official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the Wool Buyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, says:—

"The first portion of the third Christchurch wool sale of the 1963-64 season was held yesterday with an offering of 22.869 bales. A further 23,196 bales will be sold next Monday. Great interest attached to the use, for the first time, of the new wool exchange building at the Show Grounds, which elicited very favourable comments from all sections of the trade.

“As had been expected the condition of the offering was not quite up to the high standard which is usually attained at this sale. Many of the clips were rather thin and short in the staple and a certain amount of tenderness was noticeable. However, the catalogues included a number of attractive lines and there was less stain and discolouration than had been anticipated in face of the unfavourable weather conditions. Ewe wools formed the bulk of the offering but there were still a good number of hogget clips, both woolly and shorn. Very little second shear wool was included. The general condition of the offering was a little heavier than at the earlier sales. 'The sale opened with keen and well-spread competition from a full bench of buyers, and it was soon clear that the recent drop in prices for crossbred wools at Invercargill would not be sustained, with values in sellers’ favour. Fine wools also met with a buoyant sale at fully up to the Dunedin sale values. As compared with the Christchurch October sale. prices for all qualities were from 4d to 6d higher. “The main competition came from the Continent, with good support from Bradford and also Japan and the local mills, more especially for the finer qualities. “There was almost a complete clearance at auction.’’ The following is the range
