YMCA. Plans Buildings To help raise money for a new building to mark its centennial, the Christchurch Young Men’s Christian Association has almost completed the first phase of the major fund-raising effort. This topk the form of a campaign amongst members and supporters for promises for £20.000 during a three-year period. The amount in hand to date in promises during three years is £18.500, and the general secretary (Mr R. J. O’Kane) said that he expected the balance of £l5OO would be forthcoming within a short time. The campaign was held during a period of four weeks, the canvassing being done by nine teams of men from the membership groups. The highest team result. £2230. was gained by the Ys Men’s Club. The association will open a public appeal in March. 1064. to raise a substantial sum of money to augment the members' efforts. The target of the public appeal cannot be announced until the association is advised by the Government of the extent of subsidies available. The total project envisaged at present includes a large s'adium. special exercise, activity and meeting rooms, facilities for businessmen, and a hostel of 60 beds. The new building will be erected on land now being acquired in Montreal street, opposite H.M.S. Pegasus, and preliminary estimates of cost are in the vicinity of £300,000.
