AVALANCHE HITS TOW

Skier Dashes To Safety (NZ. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Ort. 29. A skier dashed to safety im Snow Valley, north Mount Egmont, yesterday afternoon when a giant avalanche crashed from a basin 600 ft above. The avalanche, estimated to be about 300 ft across, smashed into a portable ski tow, wrecking part of it. The tow’s motor was dragged from its mounting but was later recovered undamaged. An eye witness, Mr T. E Herbert, of Omata, said the avalanche gave only a swishing warning before it hurtled down in a spectacular blinding white mass. ‘‘The skier who was using the tow raced away for his life," said Mr Herbert.

"He had to get out really fast, otherwise he would have been caught in the middle of the fall,” he said.
