ICE-BREAKERS DUE
Easier Job This Year
Three American icebreakers make take only 10 days to batter a channel through the pack-ice to McMurdo Sound this summer, compared with five weeks last year. Aircraft pilots flying across the ice between Christchurch and McMurdo Sound have reported that it is not nearly so extensive as last year's 65 miles of ice. The icebreaker Atka arrived at Wellington from Boston yesterday morning, and the Glacier is expected to reach Lyttelton from Boston on Friday with the third ice-breaker, the Burton Island, which sailed from Seattle.
The Atka will leave Lyttelton on Wednesday for Scott Island. She will then sail to the edge of the pack-ice to meet the Burton Island and the Glacier. The Burton Island will leave Lyttelton on Thursday of next week and the faster Glacier on Friday The first tanker is scheduled to sail up the channel to McMurdo station early in December.
