Lawn Tennis ST. MARY’S CLUB
Revival At New Courts
The St. Mary’s Tennis Club, one of the most prominent in Christchurch before it went into recess, was revived recently, when It held its first general meeting for three years. The property the club owned in Bern,’ street, which it found too difficult to support, has been sold, and its new home will be in the grounds of St. Mary’s Manchester street.
From the sale, the clubs financed the laying of two asphalt courts on the church property. St. Christopher’s Hall facilities will be used for a clubhouse.
Mr G. Shaw, a noted Canterbury representative a few years ago, is the club’s president, and Mr R. B. Brown, chairman of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s junior management committee, is the club captain. The 50 or so who attended the general meeting were mainly young persons, which was considered promising for the future of the club. It last had a senior men's team in 1954-55, including Shaw, W. J. Smith, and M. C. Healey. Affiliation with the association again next year will be considered.
