CHILD ATE PILLS

Parents Ban

Treatment

A two-year-old boy wag brought to the Christchurch Hospital on Sunday af'.er swallowing barbiturate tablets, but although the casualty officer wanted to admit the boy to the children’s ward the parents would not allow this, nor would they permit his stomach to be washed out to try to remove the tablets. “We’ve not heard of a death as a result, but the address given was a motel, so perhaps the family is no longer with us,” commented a hospital staff member yesterday. Two children were admitted to the ward last week after poisoning themselves, a boy of four and a girl of three. The boy drank too much cough mixture, while the girl chewed an indelible pencil. Each spent one day in hospital.
