MARITIME AIRCRAFT
Further Study Necessary (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Oct. 29. “Obviously further consideration must be given before a final decision can be made,” the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said at a press conference early this afternoon. He was commenting on reports that the Government had abandoned its plans to buy five Cl3O Hecules aircraft for use in a maritime role. Mr Holyoake said the New Zealand technical team that examined the Hercules Cl3O aircraft found that they would not be so easily converted to the maritime role as had been expected. Some three months ago the Government announced it had decided in principle to buy eight of the Cl3O Hercules machines, five of which would be for a maritime roie now performed by Sunderland flying boats of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. This afternoon, neither Mr Holyoake nor the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) would comment on the suggestion that Lockhead Orion aircraft were being considered.
