CROWDED GAOLS

Not Solely A N.Z. Problem (N.Z. Press Association; AUCKLAND, Oct, 29. Cramped, crowded prisons are not a New Zealand problem only. Senior prison administrators from Australia visiting Auckland for the fourth Australian and New Zealand conference of penal administrators spoke feelingly today of prisons they have that are more Ohan 100 years old and atill in use.

Impressed by the site of the proposed new maximum security prison at Paremoremo, the visitors toured the existing Auckland prison and thought it well administered in spite of its overcrowding. They sympathised with some security and crowding problems they found, were impressed by some of the industries undertaken and were outspoken in their admiration tor the cleanliness and tidiness of the institution. "I think that in view of the cramped conditions you’ve got you do wonderful work,” said Mr J. H. Allen, Sheriff and Comptroller of Prisons in South Australia. The delegates left Auckland this afternoon for Hamilton and will have a look at the Walker ta de lent ion centre tomorrow. They will travel on down the North Island, visiting penal institutions, and then on to Christchurch, where the final conference session will be held.
