Riccarton In Command Against Sydenham

First Day: Riccarton 145 and 71/1; Sydenham lIS. Aggressive batting by E. Hayes, G. R. McAulay, and R. C. Matz thrust home the advantage Riccarton had won on the first day. Hayes gave a very useful display, and Motz, in a- situation calling tor his greatest talenits, bit his 27 in 13 minutes. With the declaration at lunch, Riccarton had tour hours to get Sydenham out, and Sydenham needed 262 to win. Although I. Hartland played a sound and stout-hearted innings, there was never much doubt about the result. D. L. Gallop looked capable of turning the tide, but after he was run out, the end came swiftly. The opening bowlers, Motz and J. W. Kiddey,

were again in form and the off-spinner, E. R. Hignett, completed a minor double with three more aheap wickets. The umpires were Messrs R. V. Taytor and I. Kennedy.
