CRICKET YOUTH
A player who, for his age. hits the ball really hard is Tim Foley. Tim plays for Xavier A team, and scores most of his runs with firm drives, both on tlie off and on-side.
In Ivan Thompson and Paul Grace, Sydenham A has two opening bowlers who show quite a turn of speed. With more accuracy, both could become successful bowlers in years to come. Perhaps the best feature of the Marist-Bryndwr team’s play is the running between the wickets. Good running is rather an uncommon sight in boys’ cricket, and it is pleasing to see that it has not been disregarded altogether. The Old Boys’ C team has a bowler of promise in Alistair Woodwood. Although he bowls quite a quick ball, he very seldom bowls an inaccurate one, and for this reason should obtain many wickets in the future. Ted Cutts is a batsman who plays good shots. Ted plays for the Riccarton B team, and as well as making very correct shots, he can hit the ball hard. Without the unselfish spirit of the many boys and men who turn out each week as coaches and umpires, the Saturday morning cricket competition would not be possible. Boys and parents alike should be grateful that so many people are prepared to give up their Saturday mornings to supervise these games and make them the success they are. One of the best fielding Sides in the boys’ competition is Xavier B. All the players in this team try hard in the field, and their example could well be followed by many other teams.
Although he does not score many runs, a batsman who applies himself is Christopher Bradley. Christopher plays for the Ma rist-Si. Mary’s C team, and his determination not to get out is commendable. Trevor Wise, a member of the St. Albans A team, shows definite ability as a batsman. His defensive play is sound, but when he chooses to do so he can play some very attractive attacking shots. John Anderson was the most successful batsman for Riccarton A scoring 10 ip the first innings aind six in the second. A tall boy, John hits the ball very hard.
One of the keenest members of the Riccarton A side is John Kennedy. John lives at Hornby and travels to the city every Saturday to play cricket. He also attends P. B. Wight’s coaching net on Wednesday. after school, at Hagley Oval.
