FLUORIDE TESTS
Children’s Badges (By • Beater Correspondent) DES MOINES (law*). Nearly 30,000 school children to the United States Mid* West are proud wearer* of little badges that say: "I fvn a tooth to science.” The children-—or mostly their parents—have given milk teeth to help discover if fluorides in drinking water protect people against Strontium 90, one of the most dangerous types of nuclear tall-out The United States Public Health Service, which awards the badges is testing the teeth to try to confirm laboratory tests that show fluorides may help reduce the risks. Many American towns are now arguing the merits of fluoridation. Some scientists are opposed to it One school of thought also holds that fluorides help prevent tooth decay. Some children in the Public Health Service experiment were choeen because they live on remote farms which get their water from deep wells with a high radium content. Others were selected because they drink fluoridated water.
