SITE FOR SCHOOL
Alternative Discussed
The board of managers of Christchurch Technical College has approached the Canterbury Education Board to find out whether the Oaks s.te in Ensors road can be made available for the new technical high school in Christchurch.
Representatives of the board of managers, the Education Board, and the regional office of the Department of Education met last week to discuss the matter, which will be considered at the next meeting of the Education Board.
When plans for the £300.000 high school were announced by the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent), it was announced that the school would be built on the Ensors road playing field site of the Technical College. The board of managers complained that the matter had not been fully discussed before being made public, and suggested that the Oaks site, between Ensors road and F:field terrace, should be considered. The, site is at present reserved by the Education Board as a future site for an intermediate school, but has been suggested as a more suitable alternative to the playing fields site because of its separation from the railway yards and its larger area It has also been said that school rolls in the southern areas of the city are staying steady or decreasing, and the need for an intermediate school is consequently lessened.
