33rd Birthday Of Akaroa C.W.I.

The iced thirty-third birthday cake of the Akaroa Country Women’s Institute was cut by two of the. institute’s oldest members (Miss A. Brochette and Mrs K. Rhodes) at an evening celebrating the anniversary recently.

Mrs L. Fechney (vicepresident), welcomed members, their families and friends, and guests, who included members from the Le Bon's Bay and Okains Bay institutes, Duvauohelle Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, scouts and high school pupils. Films on Canada were shown by Misses M. Brown and L. Harris, who also described differences in teaching methods between Canada and New Zealand, and showed dolls and curios collected during their trip abroad.

Cultural Society.—Mr I. Livingstone gave a talk entitled “A Kiwi Takes Wings” at a recent meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society He showed colour slides of Europe and the Middle East. About 60 members and friends attended. Mrs E. Cooper sang a bracket of songs, accompanied by Mrs W. E. Olds, and Mr W. Langford played pianoforte solos. It was Mr Langford’s last public appearance in Christchurch before leaving for England to continue his studies. Mr D. J. Hewitt presided at toe meeting.
