‘Classic’ Play By Rosewall (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 1. K. Rosewali, of Australia, won the American professional lawn tennis championship yesterday “with a performance that ranked as one of the classics of Forest Hills,” the “New York Times” tennis writer, Allison Danzig, said today. Rose wall beat his countryman, R. Laver, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. “The crowd of 5000 in the stadium in sultry, threatening weather witnessed an unforgettable exposition of the art. science and vigour of lawn tennis at its finest,” Danzig said. “The match was no contest after the first set, with Laver’s mighty strokes reduced to ruin as his confidence was destroyed and his touch fled.” “. . . It was one of the most harrowing, unhappy days Laver has known. Rosewall kept him under merciless. continuing pressure that brought his game to the point of almost total collapse. “Above all else it was the inflexible challenge of RoseweJl’s ground strokes—unstrained. purposeful and beautifully tamed that ruined the day for Laver,” Danzig said. Rosewali has earned almost 50.000 dollars in beating Laver 32 times in 41 matches since Laver turned professional last January. He won 1400 dollars for yesterday's victory while Laver won 1100 dollars. The New York “Herald Tribune” sports writer, Al Laney, while praising the fine play in the final, said today:
“That these two players should be the ones left to play for the ‘title’ was only one of a number of unfortunate things that prevented the tournament from being either an artistic or financial success.” Laney said the tournament’s worst blow was the loss in the first day’s play of former professional champion, P. Gonzales, who had been brought out of retirement to be the main-gate attraction. However, A. Olmedo prompty beat him.
The most unfortunate thing was that the professionals failed in their efforts to stage a tournament. They did not seem to be able to make the final mean something, however well they played. Laney said.
