MATCH WITH COAST
September 8 Suggested Dteappoiwtment at the Canterbury Rugby League’s decision not to entertain a return Canterbury-West Coast representative game on July 14 was expressed by the West Coast league in a letter received by the Canterbury league’s board of control last night But the board decided to suggest September 8 for the fixture—a date previously proposed by the West Coast. During the next two weeks the finals to find the Christchurch representative in Rothman’s tournament would be played and it would be unfair to ai leading players to undertake two hard games on successive days, said Mr L. R. Huston.
A further factor was that the Canterbury coach (Mr E.
Butts), who was a South Island selector, would be in Otago on the week-end of July 6-7 and could possibly be further committed on the following week-end, he added.
“I also feel our Kiwi players will wish to have more Chan one week-end at home before being asked to travel once more,” said Mr Huston.
Hie board adopted a motion on the lines of Mr Huston's remarks and resolved that the West Coast league be informed. In a letter to toe board, the
convener of the South Island aelectional panel (Mr T. F. McKenzie) made a plea for a full-strength CanterburyWest Coast game this month as a South Island trial. The inter-island match is to be played at Auckland on July 27.
Mr McKenzie will receive a copy of the board’s letter to the West Coast league.
