Princess Merit Fancied In Wanganui First Leg

Princess Merit is a bright prospect for the Dr. Simmons Memorial, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s meeting at Wanganui tomorB row. Hf Next month Princess Merit |H| will contest the C.J.C. Winter Cup. Tomororw’s field is much weaker than that by which she wiH be opposed over the same distance, one mile, at Riccarton. Following good hack form, F including a win at Ellerslie last month. Princess Merit has had only one start in open company and toe looked unlucky not to be closer than sixth. *

That was in the Manawatu Winter Handicap, one mile

and three furlongs. Princess Merit was going strongly a furlong out when she was denied an opening. She looked to have something in reserve near the fininsh, but by then the leaders were too far ahead.

Akubra is reported a doubtful starter for the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Patea Hack Handicap, in which, after his Hastings form, he would have been favourite.

If Akubra does not run the likely winner is the consistent Jimmy Shand. He has weigtied-m for a minor place at each of his last three starts, the last occasion being when second to the good hack Fiery Lad at Hawera.

Sir Totara is reported unlikely to start In the Hunt Club Steeplechase, and with Rippinwood scratched the way looks clear for Captain Panair, which was a good second to Captain's Gig at Hastings. Captain Panair is also engaged in the Hack Hurdles, but a rider has been engaged for han in the steeplechase. Deflation is to run twice and J. T.
