PATCHES OF TARO
Discovery On Waiheke (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 1. Three patches of taro, once cultivated by Maoris and still growing well after probably 100 years or more, were discovered by members of the Auckland University Archeological Society on Waiheke Island at the week-end. They were found on the property of Mr A. R. Alison, of Matiatia Bay. One is in a swampy stream and the others are in drier stream beds in Church Bay. Mr Alison told them of another, bigger area of taro, near Hurui Bay, which had been growing wild for at least 60 or 70 years. Other discoveries on the island included at least five pa sites, a large number of middens, and several pits.
The society hopes to explore the rest of Waiheke, to find more Maori sites, later this year.
