SICILIAN AMBUSH
Bomb Kills Seven (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PALERMO (Sicily), June 30. An explosion today killed five policemen and two Army bomb disposal experts in what authorities believe was an ambush possibly set by the Mafia. Authorities said the officers were shredded by the explosion of a charge of TNT set in an abandoned car they were searching. The men apparently were deliberately lured into the trap by an anonymous telephone call.
The massacre was the worst since the early post-war years when the late bandit, king, Salvatore Giuliano,' ruled the villages of the in-j terior with terror and blood.! The bombing occurred in the Palertno suburb of Cianculli,' a short distance from Villabate where another bombing last night killed one man and wounded two. Visible inside the ambush car was a liquid gas bottle with a partly burned fuse. The police called two bomb disposal experts who removed the fuse and advised police that there was no more danger.
When a policeman opened the car’s bonnet an explosion tore the car to bits.
