A Different Game The former Australian test cricketer, Arthur Mailey, now 75. one of the greatest slow bowlers of all time, called at Auckland on Saturday on his way to Vancouver. “Cricket is a different .game now. There are fewer personalities —caused by the absence of writers dealing with personalities.” he said. Mr Mailey. a writer and cartoonist, said people today were more interested in averages. “Take the West Indian, Wesley Hall, a great bowler and probably the best I’ve seen. I know he’s pretty fast but I don’t know what he's like off the field. Records are fictitious anyway. What averages are made depends on the apposition.” Wives Younger On the average men marry women who are slightly more than three years younger than themselves, says the Government Statistician in his report on marriage, from the 1961 population census. Writer’s Medicine An old Edinburgh chemist’s ledger has been found which 1 shows that in two years Sir Walter Scott and his wife were supplied with 5J gallons of laudanum as well as 18 dozen opium pills or lozenges. Bird Caused Fire A bird which took a cigarette butt to its nest under the eaves of a Taupo building is believed to have caused a fire in a block of shops when it dropped the butt on to roofing paper.
