Barge Holed By Rock

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 28. The 600-ton barge, Waiwaka, owned by the Alert Towing Company, of Auckland. was holed in a forward compartment when it struck a rock on the Mangawhai bar at 1 am. today. More than 400 tons of its cargo of sand was dumped at sea when the barge began to list. The Waiwaka was later brought back into harbour and beached.

The Waiwaka. a steel barge built in Hong Kong, was towed to Auckland five years ago.
