Early Bakeries

Sir, —The first bakehouse in Montreal street north was in existence when I was a small boy and it was the property of a Mr Reid. After it was repaired, Mr T. B. Whitfield was in charge for some time before Mr Robertson took it over. Later another larger

bakehouse was built adjoining it for the Canterbury Bread Company, and I received 2d a day for pumping water for the builder. Mr Thotnpoan, who had a bakery in Cambridge terrace between Cashel and Montreal streets. woa either the ptoprteter or manager. Mr Robertson took it over later. I do not know now if any cd his family run the business or if it is in possession of another person.—Yours, etc., R.HJ. June 2R 1963.
