Foothpaths

Sir, — I would draw attention to the neglected condition of the footpaths of Hawthorne street, Papanui. The tar-sealing, where it exists, is cracked. Rain and frost have gouged deep canyons across one’s path. By night, street lighting is mercifully dim, and so hides these stark outlines from the eyes, but not from the feet. It is particularly dangerous for elderly people, who naturally dread falling, and the damage to shoes generally is considerable. Tree roots cannot be held responsible—just complete lack of maintenance over (to my personal knowledge) the last six years.— Yours, etc., WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD. June 24, 1963. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Secular) said: “It is hoped to include the footpaths in Hawthorne street, along with other paths in this area, in the resealing programme for the coming season. Some preliminary patching is already in hand.”]
