100,000 Birds Banded

Eight thousand to 10.000 g-me birds are banded by the Wildlife branch of the Department of Internal Affairs each year, and about 2000 my returned every year by shooters and others, according to Mr K H. Miers, btologist in charge of the banding In addition, nongame birds are bended by the Ornithological Society of New Zealand. Since starting die work in 1947. the branch has banded about 100,000 game birds. The record length of hie for a New Zealand bird as indicated by bands is held by a black swan banded at Lake Ellesmere tn 1937 by the North Canterbury Acchmatieatdon Society and Shot at tne same lake in 1969; but a royal albatross at Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsu’a is known to be M least M years old.
