LATERAL CONTACT

Commons ealth In Future (N.Z P. A .-Reuter—Copi/rtpM) ADELAIDE. June 27. The British Commonwealth still was a powerful idea in spite of the tremendous changes which had occurred in recent years. Sir Garfield Barwick, the Minister for External Affairs, said in Adelaide yesterday. “But we are probably going to see quite a deal more decentralisation in the Commonwealth.” he said. The future would involve Australia in more direct communication with other Commonwealth countries instead of relying on talks in London to keep toe Commonwealth together. Sir Garfield Barwick said Australia must be prepared to nominate and pursue its interests with Asian countries. “Above all we must always try to see the other point of view and allow toe other countries to understand ours," he said. He urged people to realise that Australia must begin to play a more positive part in the future of Asia. This would be the pattern of Australia's future thinking in terms of its future foreign policies.
