MORALITY VIEWED

‘Chastity Not Outmoded’

Chastity was not outmoded, said Dr. J. E Caughey, a Moral Re-Armament advocate, in an article in the June 29 issue of “War Cry," the official organ of the Salvation Army of New Zealand. He said it was frightening to hear from prominent personalities in the church, in medicine, and elsewhere, that the virtues of modesty, decency. and clean living were outmoded.

"If apparently responsible people have these views, what hope is there for the youth of today?" Dr. Caughey said. He referred to view's expressed during the court case of the book, "Lady Chaititerley’s Lover.” and after the publication of the book. "Lolita.” The Vassal! case and the defections of homosexuals from the Foreign Office and the United States State Department made it clear that no known homosexual should be allowed to remain in a position of trust. "Lack of moral fibre is a certain threat to our nation,” Dr. Caughey said. “It is morally and scientifically wrong. Absolute moral standards are no longer just a matter of individual concern, they are essential for the national survival.”

Dr. Caughey ended in an appeal for politicians, and leaders in labour, commerce, and professions to take up “this fight for national survival.”
