Struggle For Power
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) DAMASCUS, June 28 Syria’s Defence Minister and Army Chief of Staff, General Hariri, clung to his post yesterday in a struggle for power which brought the country to the brink of another crisis. The Minister is said to be gaining the upper hand in the battle with his senior officers. General Hariri’s posts were threatened earlier this week when officers quietly ousted 27 “Hariri men” from army commands.
His opponents are led by the Deputy-Premier and the Interior Minister, Colonel Amin Hafez. The Ba’aithist Premier, Salah Bitar, is reported to be the mediator in the struggle. General Hariri has proved to be a stronger force than his opponents in the national revolutionary command thought. The Fifth Armoured Brigade in Homs is reported to have declared itself behind General Hariri. This would tip the scales in his favour in the power struggle, in the opinion of some observers. General Hariri was the master - mind behind the March 8 coup that brought the Ba’athists and Premier Bitar to power.
