Surf Life-Saving TAKING TIME OFF SCHOOL

Problems For Juniors

“If file New Zealand surf championships were held tn January interest in local surfin* would peter out half-way through the season," said Mr T. Jackson at a meeting of the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association on Wednesday. Mr Jackson was speaking on a remit from the Wafmairi club, which sugggested that if the Championships wepe held in January it would avoid junior swimmers having to apply for time oft school. The remit was passed. Mr Jackson added that difficulty in getting time oft school was "a lot of eye-wash." His statement was opposed by Mr B. B. Blackmore, who said it had become increasingly difficult for Junior swimmers to get away from school. "I saw several headmasters and sports masters this year, and in some cases got a very hostile reception. “Furthermore, I do not think Mr Jackson's worry’ about the season dying early is soundly based. Our job is to patrol beaches, not to worry about championships."

£lOO Grant A grant of £3OO to be spent on educational matters relating to surf life-saving has been made to the Canterbury association by the New Zealand council, which said the money should not be spent on subsidising club trips or competitions or the purchase of gear.

It suggested using the grant for lectures on safety and the education of the public, payment of expenses for club examiners, repairs to gear, and general publicity on safety measures.
