£409 RAISED BY MISSION

Maori Hostel Garden Party The sum of £4OO was raised for the social service work of the Methodist Central Mission by a garden party held at the Rehua Maori Hostel on Saturday. Members of the North Canterbury Methodist Women's Guilds presented thanks offerings which were later dedicated by the chairman of the North Canterbury Methodist Synod (the Rev. H. G. Brown). A stall run by Maori women at the garden party raised a total of £5O, which will help finance the building of a new kitchen at the rear of the meeting house at the hostel. A Maori party entertained the 400 guests with action songs, and the Christchurch Ladies’ Highland Pipe Band was also in attendance. During the afternoon, Mr Wera Couch explained the meaning and significance of the carvings and art work in the meeting house. An address on the importance of social service work was given by Canon D. Kaa. the Anglican Maori priest for the South Island. The garden party, organised by the board of management of the Central Mission and the Women’s Guild Fellowship, was opened by Or. N. G. Pickering on behalf of the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning).
