RACING Moy Defeats Key In Awapuni Gold Cup

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, March 31. Moy and Key confirmed their ranking as the two top race mares of the season when they fought out the finish of the weight-for-age Awapuni Gold Cup on the second day of the Manawatu autumn meeting on Saturday. This tame Moy was the winner but she was flat out to overhaul Key, which had to accept the role of pacemaker for the mile and a quarter journey.

There were only four runners, the other two being Determined and Sir Loin. Neither was seriously considered against their two hj<h-claas opponents at the opposite sex. Anderson tried to restrain Key as soon as the field left the stalls, but she grabbed the bit and took off. Anderson tried to hold her in, but she fought for her head for six furlongs so her rider gave her rein and across the top turn she slipped away by three lengths. ft then appeared that she might repeat last year’s tactics when she cleared away from her opponents in the last three furlongs for an easy win in race record time. She was still about three lengths clear of Moy starting the last furlong, but the combined effort of making the pace and pulling too hard found "her weakening near home and Moy stormed up with the last run to beat her by three-quarters of a length. When she won last year Key was ridden by C A. Bowry, who this time had the mount on Moy. Anderson won the race in four consecutive years from 1957 on Berne, Bridie and Picaroon (twice). Moy’s time of 2min 5 2-ssec was 2 4-ssec slower than Key's record last year. Both mares are likely to meet again in the Ormond Memorial Gold Cup at Hastings next month. Determined, which kept niggling at Key in the lead for the first six furlongs, was about four lengths away third with a gap to Sir Loin. The Hastings gelding Cool returned to his best form to win the one mile Tamatete Handicap, first leg of the double. He ran in the middle of the field till the half-mile, where he moved up to be fourth behind Fine Time, Fairassan and Acis. At the home turn Gay Gavotte. Sampler, Damselle. Vixen’s Pride and Straight Irish were also well placed. Acis, which was at long odds, soon ran to a clear lead and appeared certain to win till a stride off the post where Cool, maintaining a brilliant run reminiscent of some of his best form at this time last

year, caught him to beat him by a head. Baloo, which had only one behind him at the half-mile, also finished strongly for third a length and a half away and Fair Symbol came from behind for fourth followed -by Flying Vixen, Kawera, Lady Lorinda, Fine Time and the favourite Gay Gavotte, which enjoyed a close trail all the way but weakened badly in the straight. She was probably feeling the . effects of the fairly strenuous programme she has had on the southern trip. A double worth £26 5s 6d for £1 was completed when the favourite and off-course substitute, Plantation, easily won the second leg, the Longburn Handicap. The lightweights Extra and Truru set a solid pace. Donald Dinnie joined Extra and Truru at the three furlongs and the trio were abreast turning for home just ahead of Plantation, Starborough and Noranda. They had no sooner straightened up than Plantation ran clear. He coasted home under n hold three lengths in front of Donald Dinnie, which held off Noranda by a nose. For Free narrowly beat Extra for fourth and they were followed by Waitoa (which dwelt at the start). Gold Splice, Truro, Starborough and Pine Ridge. i* Dane, a two-year-old colt by Summertime from Casa, raced by his breeder, Mr A. H. Paul, of Auckland, compensated for his abject failure when favourite for the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes on the first day with an easy and most impressive win in the Stonyhurst Handicap. After beginning much better than he did on the first day, he raced with Wayward in the lead till they reached the straight and then cleared away to win on the bit by about five lengths from Boundless, with the favourite Dandeinee the same distance away third. The performance ranked Dane highly as Boundless, which had 8-4, had to concede the winner only 11b. KARERE HIGH-WEIGHT, £500; Ilf—6/6 ELREY (1) 10-11 C R. CooksTey 1; 2/2 GOLDEN MELODY (11). 9-9 B.
