Peerswick Wins Welcome Stakes

Peerswick became the first two-year-old to win more than one race in the South Island this season when he outclassed his rivals in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes. Peerswick started from the second line and he was not seriously hampered. Even so he was some 30 yards from the lead at the end of half a furlong.

J. D. Litten improved from the half-mile and had Peerswick three wide on the outside of the leaders at the straight entrance. He was much too strong in stamina for the others and won by more than two lengths from Meadowmae and Bellajily after equalling the race record of 2min 41 3-ssec established by Sun Chief in 1959. Peerswick is trained at West Melton by Litten, for whom it was his first win in the race. He is raced by Messrs Henderson Bros., of West Melton, and is a colt by Dignus from Superfortress. Peerswick’s other win was in the Rangiora Raceway Stakes in December. Falstaff, Bellajily, Cathpete, Disband, Wildwood Chief, which was pulled up, Scottish Laddie and Super Chief gave ground at the start. Red Knight and Hindu Prince led out, with Red Knight working clear at the end of a furlong. He led by a length and a half from Hindu Prince at the six furlongs, with the same distance back to Meadowmae. Then came Rocky Star, Space Cadet, Belajilly, Falstaff, Scottish Laddie, Peerswick, Paitchy and Cathpete. La Scala tangled half a furlong earlier. Ballajily improved from the three furlongs and with Hindu Prince went to the front at the two furlongs. They were together on the inside of Peerswick racing to the straight, with Rocky Star, Meadowmae, Patchy and Cathpete next. Peerswick soon took control and eame on to win decisively by two lengths and a half. Meadowmae finished slightly better than Bellajily to take second by a head. Rocky Star was two lengths back fourth, with half a head to Patchy, which was forced wide inside the last three furlongs. Cathpete was half a length further back, ahead of Hindu Prince, La Scala and Falstaff, with a gap to Space Cadet First For Season

Southern Cross, which had been placed in tour of his 11

earlier starts, gained an overdue first win for the season in the Preliminary Handicap. He was in the middle of the i field until the half-mile and rushed up to take a short lead from the pacemaker, Deep Lead, ait the three fur- ■ tongs. Southern Cross led Deep Lead racing to the straight, with Flying Blue, Young Dieman (wide), Lilt, Golden • Rule, Cushie Doo and Dyson handy. Southern Cross had too ' much in reserve and he won ! handily by half a neck from Flying Blue, which had every chance. Lilt finished gamely from a handy position for third a length away, with half a length to Dyson, a head to Johnny Dean, a ' nose to Young Dieman and a head to Deep Lead, which was clear of Cushie Doo, Inglemeod, Catamite and Sarona. Kyle View, Carver Doon, Golden Rule. Moose and Arizozna Gal gave ground at the start. Finished Fast Toby Brigade finished with a powerful run from near the tail of the field at the two furlongs to win the Fendaltori Handicap. lit was the fifth win of the season tor the Light Brigade four-year-old. Toby Brigade broke at the start and he was in the last three all the way. His chances still looked anything but bright at the straight entrance where Wonthaggi led from Terrace Dale, Pharaoh, Storm Water, Trade Talk, Bormieburn, Vaneee and Loyal Brigade. Just when Terrace Dale looked the 1 likely winner, Toby Brigade came very fest wider out. He was too speedy for any 1 of the others and won easily by a length. Terrace Dale held on for second a short length in front of Wonthaggi, with Storm Water right up fourth ahead of Loyal Brigade, Trade Talk, Bonnieburn and Vaneee. Aiblins and Bonnieburn loet their chances at the start. Fifth Win Frogman gained his fifth win for the season when he led from end to end in the Spreydon Handicap. He set a fair pace in the middle stages and raced to the straight on the inside at Flying Maiden, with Flying Paddy breaking in third place, ahead of Fiammetta, Rebel and Astralight. Frogman was atrongiy challenged imide the furlong, but he fought back to win by half a neck from Fiamnwtta, which broke and loot several lengths at the end of a furlong. Agtaalight, after breaking near the three furlongs, came again for third only a head behind Fiammetta, with a length and a half to Trecey’s Pal and four lengths to Rebel, which was dear of Acquit, Snow Globe and Flying Maiden.
