RUSSIA IN PACIFIC

Always 100 Submarines (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA. March 26. Russia had at least 100 submarines always on patrol in the Pacific, Vice-Admiral Thach, commander of United States anti-submarine forces in the Pacific, said today. Admiral Thach, who is in Canberra to talk to Australian defence officiate, was speaking to a press conference. He said Russia already had an atom-powered submarine force in operation and, although this was small, it was receiving a great concentration of effort. Russia had also made Communist China the fourth submarine power in the world. This build-up posed a threat to the West that could be met only by co-operation among countries, and individual development of antisubmarine forces. Admiral Thach said. At a later meeting with reporters, Admiral Thach said Russia was equipping its Pacific fleet submarines with missiles at a fast rate. He said the Indian Ocean was the weak point in the Free World’s anti-submarine defences.
