PERTH TEAM PROTEST

Concern Over Article

A report in the "Listener" last week, suggesting that New Zealand rowing teams competing at the Perth Empire Games had been approaching professional status was raised at a meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Association last evening.

It was" decided to draw the attention of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association to the report with a view that a strong protest should be made by the national council.

Such a suggestion could not have been further from the truth, the president of the association (Mr B. R. Walker) said. It was obvious that the writer was referring to the New Zeeland eights crew. It was a fact that their rigorous training schedule was approaching the programmes followed by professional sportsmen. but in all other respects the crew - was an amateur one. Members had made considerable financial sacrifices and several had set their -careers back several months and in some cases yean, to be able to, compete at Perth. A suggestion of professionalism could do rowing a lot of harm, said Mr Walker.
