Not Guilty Of Rape
(N.Z. Preet Association) GISBORNE. February 20. After a retirement of 90 minutes, a jury in the Supreme Court today returned verdicts of not guilty on charges of rape and attempted rape preferred agantot Hannu Matti Rannali. aged 18. an apprentice mechanic, of Kawerau and Rewiti Patau Tamihere, ged 19, a mill hand, also of Kawerau.
It was alleged that the offences, involving a girl of 16, occurred at Kawerau on or about December 26. 1962 The case was heard by Mr Justice Boys Mr J G. Nolan was Crown prosecutor and Mr D R Kohn appeared for the accused
Later two other youths were charged with rape of a 16-year-old girl at Kawerau on December 26.
The youths, who pleaded
not guilty, were Bernard Andrew Connerton, aged 18 an apprentice mechanic, and George Manley Hdpburn aged 16, a workman, both of Kawerau. They were alternatively charged with attempted rope.
