TROTTING Resistor And Spark Gap Shape Well At Brighton

Resistor and Spark Gap, probable rivals for the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap, the principal race for trotters at the Wellington Trotting Club’s Royal meeting next month, shaped well against the pacers in the Free-for-all at trials held by the Canterbury Trotting Owners’ and Breeders* Association at New Brighton yesterday.

The Free-for-all was won by Morano Boy, which has also been nominated for Hutt Park. Johnny Guitar, an entrant for the Queen Elizabeth Handicap ait the Royal meeting, was fourth. Resistor went to the front from the start and set a strong pace for Morano Boy to toe straight. Spark Gap ran without a trail alongside Morano Boy and Johnny Guitar tracked Spark Gap from toe batfudle.

Morano Boy was brought three wide to challenge Resistor and Spark Gap for toe lead a furlong out and ran on well to win by a length. Morano Boy ran the mile and a half in 3min 19 4-ssec and came toe last quarter in 31 2-seec. That made the performances of Resistor and Spark Gap, which were separated for second and third by half a length, look very good.

Johnny Guitar was not required to do his best in toe last furlong. He was a length back fourth. Stormont just held his ground in the run home for fifth and he was followed by Stand In, Florita and Royal Attack. Zagar, which tailed off early in toe contest was last in a gap. Two-Year-Olds Watooad Jim and a Light Brigade—Gold Cloud filly won the respective heats of toe two-year-old event. She took 2sec longer to run toe mile and a quarter than Wainond Jim in the flrat heat La Scala beat Meadow Mac handily for third and Operatic improved four places in the last half-mile for fourth. A Fallacy Star Rosa youngster was next home ahead of Beresford Lady and Break Through.

Easy For Surf

Surf showed that he will' be a good prospect for the Nelson meeting next weekend when he led for the best part of the last mile of the 3min 37sec class trot and won without being extended by two lengths and a half.

War Scene, which won the Tawera Handicap at Hororata last Saturday at long odds, made another sound showing to finish second. He made ground quickly from the 36yard mark and ran in third position from toe mile to the straight entrance. He out-finished Frogman, which had his chance, by half a length, and Ardleigh made ground on toe inner in the straight for a close fourth. Miriam Hall, which trailed to the straight was a neck back fourth.

Kinsella inched Barnie Widow out of first in the last stride of toe second heat A sharp run from the middle of the field carried Kinsella into a challenging position on the home turn. He ranged up to Shanray and Barney Widow at the furlong and battled on solidly for a narrow win. Barney Widow, which ran in a close trailing position to toe straight, beat the pacemaker, Shanray, comfortably. Joy town was a weakening fourth, and Adulate led in the others.
