FOOTWEAR LICENCES
Token Plan Attacked (N.Z. Press Association) WAIRAKEI. October 1. The New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers' Federation today expressed concern at the Government’s intention to issue token licences for consumer goods. The annual conference of the federation at Wairakei decided to write to the Department of Industries and Commerce as follows: “In view of the recent announcement by the Government that consideration has been given to the introduction of token licences for consumer goods, the federation expresses its strong opposition to any token licences being granted to footwear manufacturers, when footwear manufacturers were unable to secure adequate licences to import raw materials.” In doing so the federation expressed its appreciation of the recommendation of Dr. W. B. Sutch, Secretary of Industries and Commerce, that the footwear manufacturers increase their use of New Zealand-produced raw materials, made more specialised lines and place more accent on styles designed particularly for New Zealanders.
