RUGBY OTAGO DELAYS SELECTION
;17 Players Named (New Zealand Press Association) g DUNEDIN, August 1(5. j Undecided on the wing positions and the arrangement of the second row, the Otago Rugby selectors today announced the names of 17 players from whom they will select the team to play Canterbury at Carisbrook on Saturday.
All the players in the team which beat South Canterbury at Timaru have been ’ included, with the addition . of D. H. Montgomery (wing), who was injured against ’ Southland, and E. J. McLennan Hock), who was not available for the Timaru match. M. C. Meikle (lock) and D. W. Clark (flanker) are definite choices, and the other two places will be contested between McLennan. H. Morrison and J. G. Flannery. The selectors will also have to decide whether Montgomery is fit. The decisions will not be made until the eve of the game. The 17 plavers named are: E. T. Jopson, K. H. Eglinton, W. J. McAuley, D. H Montgomery, I. S. T. Smith. W. A. Davies, E. W. Kirton. C. J. Laidlaw, L. A. Scherp. D. W. Clark. M. C. Meikie. H. Morrison, E. J McLennan. J. G. Flannery. J. F. Anderson, B. F Duncan. J. C. Lindsay. Emergencies: K. Breb- , ner, M. Croxson. A. N. Creighton.
Otago has been in splendid form this season and it should provide Canterbury with stiff opposition The Canterbury team is a good one. but the players will find Otago a different proposition than in the past. Otago has improved tremendously in the last year or so and in the game against Southland the dark blue forwards looked like Otago packs of old Otago will have an advantage of about half-a-stone a man in front, but Canterbury was outweighed in all its matches on. the northern tour. It made little difference in the scrums where D Young was at his best, and it made for greater mobility in the loose. J. N. Creighton will be hooking tomorrow so Canterbury will be as well served even against such a formidable opponent as Duncan, who took seven tight heads against Southland The Otago backs are a likely combination. well served by the inside combination of Laidlaw, Kirton and. Davies, all of Otago University. Laidlaw, who is only 18. has great promise as those who saw the North-South game must have realised.
