D. A. Stevens At Top In Woodward Cup Golf

OF the 87 golfers who took part in this year’s Woodward Cup inter-club competition, only 42 played in all seven matches; and of the 42, only two went through without defeat They were L. A Watson, of the Christchurch A team, and D. J. Gaudin, of the Avondale team. Both Watson and Gaudin won five matches and halved two. Although he lost one game, J. H. Broadhurst, of Russley, also scored six points for his team. His loss was in the first round.

Other successful players were D. A. Stevens (Russley A), D. M. Murdoch (Templeton), and C. L. Jacobsen (Avondale), each of whom had five wins and a half. Players who scored five

points were R. K. Atkinson (Russley), E. H. Richards (Russley A), R. E. Irving (Waitikiri), M. J. McNally (Waitikiri), D. F. Williamson (Christchurch A), and A. R. Watson (Christchurch B). L. A. Watson’s success was the more commendable for the fact that he plays little golf now. He was a Canterbury representative a few years ago. Gaudin, a young and long-hitting player, was prominent in junior tournaments two or three seasons ago.

But it is Stevens who still holds pride of place among contemporary club golfers. He has scored 82.5 per cent, of the possible points from his Woodward Cup games in his three seasons in Christ-

church. Others with good records are J. W. Jackson (78.6 per cent.), Broadhurst (76.1) C. J. Ward (75.5), J. P. Devine (73.6), R. C. Murray (727), Murdoch (72.5), A W. Robinson (71.6), K. D. Foxton (715), W. R. Cant (67.1) E. H. Richards (66.7), M. R. Blank (65.4), Atkinson (63.1) L. A. Watson (62.5), C. W. Caldwell (60.8), and W. D. Armstrong (60.7). The former Russley player, M. W. Stanley, scored 79.5 per cent, of the possible during . his many years in Christchurch. D. J. Ramsay had a percentage of 74, and R. J. Ramsay 73.
