TESTING SAFETY BELTS.—A 14-stone dummy, with movable limbs, simulates a 40-mile an hour crash at the British Standards Institute test centre while testing a new type of car safety belt. The dummy, on a trolley weighing half a ton, hurtles along a 100ft track and the moment of impact is filmed by high speed movie cameras to allow the results to be carefully studied. All safety belts sold in Britain must conform to the Institute’s specifications. Similar safeguards exist for buyers of safety belts in New Zealand.
