Bryndwr Fire Station Site To Be Debated

The siting of a proposed new fire station in the northwest area of Christchurch nearer to Christchurch Airport will be discussed fully at the next meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board.

This was decided by a special meeting of the board after it had heard a deputation from the City Council airport committee, consisting of Cr. A. R. Guthrey and the airport manager, Mr A. I. R. Jamieson.

Cr. Guthrey asked the board to reconsider its decision to site the proposed fire

station on the corner of Grahams road and Wairakei road and to place it nearer the airport. “It is felt so important to have the fire station nearer the airport that the CityCouncil will provide the land at a peppercorn rental,’’ l.e said.

At the airport there were millions of pounds worth of buildings and equipment. The airport was the maintenance and servicing centre for the National Airways Corporation. If fire damaged the workshops, the whole of New

Zealand’s internal air services would be disrupted. The deputation was supported by two board members, Messrs A. S. Hollander and J. R. Smith. Mr Smith said the value of property at the airport had to be weighed against the fire hazard for private properties in the Bryndwr district. His motion that the board reconsider its earlier decision on the siting of the fire station at the next meeting was approved unanimously. It was decided also that the Fire Service Council should

be asked to investigate any sites considered suitable. Mr W. E. Olds said that in deciding the site of the station, the board should consider the large housing area in the district, the proposed new industries and the airport.

If the station was put nearer the airport the airport authorities might consider they had prior rights in the event of a fire, he said.
