PRISONERS RELEASED

Announcement In Accra

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ACCRA, June 21. President Nkrumah’s office yesterday announced the release of 152 more persons held in preventive detention in Ghana. They included one of the Opposition's top leaders, Dr. J. B. Danquah. Another leading Opposition member of Parliament released was Mr Victor Owusu, a lawyer. But the name of the Opposition leader. Mr Joe Appiah, was not on the list of detainees freed yesterday. Including a number of detainees released in a “gesture of reconciliation" announced by President Nkrumah last May 5. the number now freed is 312. This is believed to account for most of those held under Ghana's Preventive Detention Act.

Dr. Danquah. aged. 66, a leading Ghanaian lawyer, was the United Party candidate against Dr. Nkrumah in the 1960 presidential election. He was arrested with Mr Appiah and some 50 other persons last October.
