Sportsman’s Notebook C. WAUGH ENTERED FOR S.I. SQUASH TITLES

C. Waugh, the national squash rackets Champion, will travel from Palmerston North for the South Canterbury championships which begin in Timaru tonight, and continue throughout the week-end Waugih is seeded No. 1 in the A grade championship, and his expected semi-final meeting with G. L. Bird should prove the highlight of the season to date. Last season Bird all but beat Waugh in two spectacular matches, in the annual inter-island fixture and in the Cousins Shield final between Timaru and Palmerston North. The performances of Bird, seeded third. K. R. Green, the Canterbury open title-holder, seeded to meet Waugh in the final, and F. N. Coe, the present South Canterbury title-holder (No. 4) will provide an early indication of southern prospects for this year’s national meeting, to be held at Palmerston North in August, and also for the South Island titles at Christchurch earlier that month.

Waugh is reported to be in top form—he recently beat I. Easton, No. 2 on the national ranking list, 9-3, 9-3, 9-3, in tihe final of the Manawatu open—and is the obvious favourite for the title. He is the only North Island player but very large entries have been received from Timaru, Oarnaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill, and nine from Christchurch will make the trip to Timaru. The ranked Christchurch players. M. J. Simons, P. M Hill and L. A. Milne, have places in the A grade, limited as usual to 16. Milne plays Coe in the first round. Simons and Hill, who will meet M. M. Jones and W. A. Green, both have good prospects of an early success. The B grade seedings are P. C. Angland (Timaru), T C. Henshall (Invercargill), A. Cartright (Oamaru), and A. G. Wilson (Timaru). There are 19 in the B, and 20 in the C grade, and the handicap event has been limited to 41. E. R. Morris, P. D Preston, M. Sugrue, W. Thom. S. Suckling, and W. G. Clancy from Christchurch will play in the B and C grades, and all the Christchurch players are in the handicap with the exception of Simons and Sugrue. D. R. Preston, formerly of Christchurch, has entered from Dunedin. Beaten by Bird in the first round of the Canterbury open, he has been unlucky enough to draw the same player again. ¥ ¥ *

N. K. Roberts Retired A nose injury he suffered in the Papanui-Lmwood match early in the season has prevented N. K. Roberts, one of the finest of New Zealand’s Rugby league half-backs, from making a successful comeback to senior footbail Roberts, who officially retired in 1960, said this week that because the nose injury would have prevented him from playing for another five weeks he has decided that he will not play again. Roberts was the ooach of the Canterbury team that beat Auckland earlier this month

Ski-ing Visits As a move to encourage inter-club visting, ski clubs affiliated to the Canterbury Ski Association have agreed to a reciprocal charging for hut fees. Visitors who belong to another club will be charged the host club’s normal fee plus 50 per cent. Charges for non-members are usually double those for members. ¥ ¥ ¥ Important Match There will be more than usual interest in the senior Rugby League matches tomorrow for the co-leaders Of the competition—Papanui and Hornby—are matched in the main attraction at the Show Grounds. They have established such a commanding lead that the championship can now only be won by one of them; but what is probably more important is that the successful side tomorrow will have also taken a step in qualifying to play in the Rothman’s national club tournament. Because of its first round win over Papanui and its more consistent and impressive record during the season, Hornby could be rightly regarded as slight favourite. Papanui's form against some of the more lowly ranked sides has not been entirely convincing but it has the ability to rise to the occasion, as it will surely need to today. ¥ ¥ ¥ Tournament Dates Dates for Australian tennis tournaments in which a number of prominent overseas players as well as leading Australians are expected to take part next season are: October 15-20, Australian hardcourt championships, Brisbane; October 22-27, Queensland championships. Brisbane; November 3-10, Western Australian championships, Perth; November 12-17, South Australian championships. Adelaide; November 22-Decem-ber 2, New South Wales championships, Sydney; December 26, 27, 28, Davis Cup challenge round, Brisbane; January 10-19, Australian championships, Adelaide.
