Golf LARGE FIELD AT START

£3850 Match At Leeds (N.Z .P. A.-Reuter— Copyright) LEEDS, June 21 A record field of more than 200 players began a dawn-to-dusk day of golf in the first round of the £3850 “Yorkshire Evening News" 73-hole tournament today. The huge field went out in three-bailers on the 6702vd course from 8 a.m. in unbroken sequence for nine hours in search of the £lOOO top prize. For most, it is also a final tournament practise before the open championships at Troon. Ayrshire, early in July. Peter Thomson, of Australia, 5 to 2 favourite to win the event for the third successive year, and the fourth time in all, was among the late starters. Before he hit a ball he knew what some of his close rivals—his compatriot, Kel Nagle, and the British Ryder Cup men. Ken Bousfield, Harry Weetman and Dai Rees—had done.

Another round will be played tomorrow, and the 40 leaders will qualify for the final 36 holes on Saturday.
