Economic Survey
Key figures in the Economic Survey (tabled in Parliament yesterday) show the factors that have helped to stabilise the national economy in the last year. Export earnings, though still well below the level needed to pay for all imports at the present rate, steadied; the demand for construction work of all classes has fallen; and the call on trading bank advances has been checked. Another important influence was the Large increase in immigration (mostly with Government assistance), which added 19,600 to the population and helped to reduce the number of vacant positions in industry. Final national income figures are not yet available, but. the Survey concludes that inert sees in *xp*ndituj*
were much more in line with productivity, reducing the demand on overseas resources by about £25 million. Much of the information in the survey is summarised in graphic form, examples of which follow:
