“Field Day” On Cars Passing School Bus

NEW PLYMOUTH, June 21
As a result of an accident to a child alighting from a school bus on Monday afternoon, officers of the Transport Department at NewPlymouth later had a “field day” on motorists speeding past a stationary school bus The transport officer of the Taranaki Education Board. Mr K A Alp. told the board at New Plymouth today that the child Julie Gray, aged 8, of Sentry HLH. was struck by a car. suffering only minor injuries “The driver of the bus told
m<_ that his nerves were shattered by the way many vehicles speed past the stationary bus.” said Mr Alp "The next day, a traffic officer went out behind the bus, and I followed in my own car It was a field day Several tickets were issued when the bus ivas stopped, and many more could have been giver, had the officer not been busy writing one as other cars went past "At one stage, he had cars lined up on both sides of the roted," Mr Alp ; Said One board member said he did not know of any restriction, and another said that he thought the limit was 20 miles an hour The board decided to write to the Commissioner of Transport, expressing jts concern at the speed of vehicles passing stationary school buses, and asking for increased publicity to be given to the speed limit.
