THE PHILIPPINES REPUBLIC CELEBRATES FREEDOM FROM SPANISH RULE.—President Macapagal addressing a big crowd in Manila on the republic's new National Day (June 12). The ceremonies held commemorated the day 64 years ago when revolutionary leaders declared the Philippines independent of Spain. The hero of the day was General Emilio Aguinalso, aged 93 (left foreground), who proclaimed his country independent in 1898, but later surrendered to United States forces. His wife is seated beside him. The United States granted the Philippines complete sovereignty in 1946.
