CARBIDE SCHEME
Criticism Of Delay (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 20. A sharp attack on the Government's approval "in principle" of a plan to produce calcium carbide in Buller was made in Parliament today by Mr p Blanchfield (Opposition. Westland). "The project is fine, but I want to see the words ‘in principle’ changed to ’in practice.’ Mr Blanchfield said Too much delay and lack of decision had taken place already on projects like this, he said It was known for instance, that it wss eight months before the company concerned received a reply from the department on electric power
There was no question about the power sources being available in Buller The Ohika-rsui was only one of a number of rivers which would provide an adequate amount of low-cost power “If this particular American company which is investigating the area decides for some reason not to go on with it. I believe the Government should go on with it We should do it ourselves, for tile good of New Zealand." said Mr Blanchfield
