Facilities On Coast
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. June 20 Mr P. Blanchfield (Opposition. Westland) in Parliament today criticised the Government’s “steady-as-you-go” policy as a poor slogan for e virile and prosperous country
"Did those countries devastated by the war sit back with this sort of slogan?” he asked.
“No. they cracked on the pace Today is a day of speed and progress, and if we do not watch out. we shall be left behind ”
Mr Blanchfield made a plea for the improvement of the port of Greymouth The "Lagoon Dock” project approved in the 1940’s should be revived, for the present wharf would not last for ever Something should be done about the plan for extending the breakwater 300 feet
The harbour came first, and trade followed it. Mr Blanchfield said
Already Westland was promised :.wo timber processing factories and a carbide industry The dairy produce of the province had risen 8 per cent, in a year. Bituminous coal would always be in demand, and drilling for oil was in progress at Kumara “We need an improved harbour. so that we can be ready.” Mr Blanchfield said.
